Michigan State coach Tom Izzo is relieved his banged-up team has four days off before its next game in the NCAA tournament.

Not that it will help Kalin Lucas.

An MRI confirmed the junior guard ruptured the Achilles tendon in his left foot during the first half of Sunday’s NCAA tournament game against Maryland.

The recovery time is expected to be 4-6 months.

“We feel terrible for Kalin, he was having a great NCAA tournament,” Izzo said in a statement. “The good news is there is no doubt he will make a full and complete recovery. He’s a tough kid and he’ll do everything necessary to return to his elite level.”

Lucas’ replacement, Korie Lucious, beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer that lifted the fifth-seeded Spartans to an 85-83 win over fourth-seeded Maryland on Sunday.

Dan LeFevour ran for four touchdowns and passed for two more, leading Central Michigan to a 56-28 victory over Toledo on Wednesday night.


LeFevour increased his career total to 45 touchdowns rushing for the Chippewas (8-2, 6-0 Mid-American Conference), moving past Curtis Adams (1981-84) for the school record.

Bryan Anderson caught four passes for 67 yards for Central Michigan. He has a reception in 50 straight games, the longest active streak in the country and one game shy of the NCAA record.

As the coach of Michigan State’s secondary, Harlon Barnett found himself on the receiving end of numerous questions about the unit’s struggles against Central Michigan Saturday. Central’s spread offense piled up 352 passing yards against the Spartan defense, and the secondary was plagued by late-hit and pass-interference calls.

“We kinda sat around and watched more than took it,” Barnett said. “We need to play with confidence, play with the term that everyone’s using now — swagger. I think we’re getting it back after watching today’s practice and we should be ready to go on Saturday.”

MSU made one change to its depth chart on Tuesday, having sophomore Trenton Robinson start at free safety instead of Danny Fortener this weekend at Notre Dame. Robinson entered last week’s game early and remained for the rest of the contest. He finished with 6.5 tackles.

Robinson was a standout in spring ball, but lost some ground during preseason camp. With Saturday’s effort, he earned his way back into a starting position.
