Slugger Miguel Cabrera is one of three Tigers nominated for Major League Baseball’s annual Hank Aaron Award.
The Hank Aaron Award, presented by Sharp, is presented annually to the best overall offensive performer in each league, with each club having three nominees. This is the seventh consecutive year that fans have had a voice in selecting the award winners.
Fans can vote through Sept. 15 to determine the club nominee, and then voting will be held Sept. 16-30 to select the winner in each league. The winners will be announced during the World Series.

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew says he hopes to know soon what NFL commissioner Roger Goodell decides to do about defensive tackle Grady Jackson’s playing status
Mayhew says Friday that Goodell had indicated he would make a decision about Jackson “well before” the season starts next month. Jackson was on a list of players last season accused of using a diuretic, which can serve as a masking agent for steroids. He wasn’t suspended. The NFL Players Association has a federal appeal pending in an attempt to aid Kevin and Pat Williams of the Minnesota Vikings and three other players suspended for the same alleged violation. The other players are New Orleans defensive ends Charles Grant and Will Smith and former Saints running back Deuce McAllister.

Rick Porcello’s time in the penalty box — or club box, in this case — is finally over. That’s good, because he’s getting bored watching games from up there.
After serving a five-game suspension for last week’s altercation with Red Sox slugger Kevin Youkilis, Porcello is free to pitch, and the Tigers aren’t wasting any time getting him back on the mound. Though they could’ve used Monday’s off-day to skip Porcello and use him later in the week, the Tigers wanted to slot him in for Tuesday’s series opener against the Mariners and get him back throwing without too much rust.
His 15-pitch outing Tuesday ended up providing plenty of rest in itself, though his 15th and final pitch provided most of the highlights that night from Fenway Park. Take away that one-plus innings, and he hasn’t thrown a full outing since Aug. 6. He ended up throwing an extra bullpen session once the Tigers got back to Detroit to make up for it. Now, he’s ready to go back to work.

Alex Avila won’t have to wait long after his Major League debut on Thursday to be back in the Tigers lineup. Manager Jim Leyland said he plans to use his young catcher in specific spots of the Tigers rotation, essentially creating a platoon situation behind the plate.
The Tigers called up Avila from Double-A Erie after Tuesday’s game to help take some of the workload off of Laird, who has already caught more games than he did all of last year. However, it’s a little trickier doing that with a 22-year-old rookie who hasn’t yet had a full season of pro ball.

To Detroit Lions fans, he’s just Calvin. Maybe this year the rest of the NFL will know him that way, too.
Receiver Calvin Johnson was one of the very few bright spots during the Lions’ 0-16 season a year ago. The 6-foot-5 Johnson started all 16 games and finished with 78 catches for 1,331 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He matched Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald for the most scoring catches in the league and was second in yards per catch (17.1) before being chosen as a Pro Bowl alternate. Entering his third season, he’s already piled up 126 catches and 2,087 yards despite making just 48 receptions his rookie season.

For a manager who worked in the National League for more than a decade, Jim Leyland doesn’t like the squeeze play. In fact, he can’t take it. It drives him crazy.
So many things can go wrong — the batter misses the bunt, the runner gives away the play by taking off too early, the opposing manager calls a pitchout — that the suspense tears him up. From the time he puts down the sign until the pitch, it seems like an eternity. So it should come as a surprise that Leyland has tortured himself with no fewer than five squeeze bunts this year, two in the same game, until you consider how Leyland’s nerves — and more importantly, his offense — have been going.
