After days of debate, the Seattle Mariners traded left-handed pitcher Jarrod Washburn to the Detroit Tigers for two young pitchers, giving the Tigers another veteran for their rotation as they try to hold on to the AL Central lead.

With Washburn’s trade value at its highest, the Mariners sent the 34-year-old to the Tigers for left-hander Luke French and minor league prospect Mauricio Robles. The deal was announced just hours before the non-waiver 4 p.m. ET trade deadline arrived. “Washburn is having a tremendous season and he has been a quality major league starter throughout his career,” Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said.

Miguel Cabrera said last week he felt like he was trying to drive in 10 runs with one swing of the bat. As his bizarre season at the plate continues, he sounded like someone who was trying to simplify matters when he stepped to the plate.

The numbers would suggest that he’s doing quite well at that, until one looks at the statistical splits. Overall, his .326 batting average entering Tuesday’s 7-3 loss to the Rangers ranked fourth among American League hitters, and his .933 OPS ranked 14th. He added to both of those figures with a pair of opposite-field singles in his first two at-bats. While he has faded a little bit since his torrid opening month, his average has held nearly steady in the .320s or low .330s since dropping off from the .350s at the start of June.

Carlos Guillen can’t bat right-handed quite yet, and he can’t play the field. But as a left-handed-hitting designated hitter, he can still hit. And on a Tigers team needing offense, they hope he can add a spark.

With that in mind, the Tigers activated Guillen from the disabled list Friday and put him in the starting lineup for the first game of Friday’s day-night doubleheader against the White Sox, his first game action with Detroit since May 4. He batted fifth as the designated hitter, which is where he’ll likely stay against right-handed pitchers until his shoulder allows him to switch-hit and make outfield throws.

The Detroit Pistons have signed free-agent forward Chris Wilcox to a multiyear contract.

The agreement was first reported by ESPN.com’s Chad Ford. A source said the contract is for two years and $6 million.
The 26-year-old Wilcox has appeared in 448 NBA games since the Los Angeles Clippers drafted him eighth overall in 2002. He also has played for Seattle/Oklahoma City and New York, averaging 9.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 21.7 minutes per game in his career.

Lou Creekmur, who helped solidify the left side of the Lions’ offensive line over 10 Hall of Fame seasons that included three world championships in the 1950s, died Sunday in Tamarac, Fla. He was 82 and had been in failing health in recent years, according to the Lions.

The Lions drafted Creekmur out of William & Mary in the second round in 1950. He played his entire career in Detroit. From 1950 to 1959, he was named to eight Pro Bowls and made All-Pro six times. Two other Lions in the Hall of Fame, quarterback Bobby Layne and halfback Doak Walker, often credited Creekmur for their success.
