Tigers rookie Porcello impresses Whitey Herzog

Detroit Tigers rookie right-hander Rick Porcello has gotten a rave review from one of the most respected baseball men of his time: Whitey Herzog, who attended the game Porcello started in St. Louis a few weeks ago.
“What impressed me the most is that he didn’t try to blow the hitters away,” Herzog said in a telephone interview. “He’s not overpowering. He’s a pitcher. He has good movement.” In the game in St. Louis, Porcello gave up three runs (one earned) in five innings. As Herzog noted, “He could have had a shutout — the Tigers didn’t play good defense.” Herzog, the longtime manager, also has worked in scouting and player development. He has seen lots of young pitchers over the decades.
